June 2022
Saturday 11th Boathouse 4 Portsmouth Historic Dockyard - Saturday 11 June 2022.
Brian Eyley (Sue's husband) will take us on a tour of behind-the-scenes parts of Boathouse 4. Historic boats are restored here, new craft built and there is a boatbuilding college teaching traditional boatbuilding skills which has several female students. The tour will include some history of the Dockyard and boats so is not unduly technical and will visit areas not normally accessible to the public including boats afloat on pontoons and the workshop areas, please - no high heels!
If sufficient people sign up for this event, there may be an opportunity to have a short harbour trip in a restored historic vessel which could be either a seaplane tender or a small landing craft. This would extend the tour by 40 minutes or so and would cost £10/£15pp, depending on length of trip. No sou'westers required!
Preliminary timetable (depends on numbers):
12:30 - meet at Ship and Castle pub, opposite the Victory Gate main entrance to the
Historic Dockyard for pre-visit pub lunch.
1:45 - enter Historic Dockyard (free)
2:00 - guided tour of Boathouse 4 (free)
3:00 - end
For the pub lunch, it's easiest if everyone orders their own food on arrival for serving together at a time to be agreed. If there are more than 12, prior ordering might make things more streamlined. Individual payment on the day by cash or card direct to both the pub and the dockyard.
